Cottage Season Started Early

I[[var _gaq = _gaq || []; _gaq.push([‘_setAccount’, ‘UA-22845532-1’]); _gaq.push([‘_trackPageview’]); (function() { var ga = document.createElement(‘script’); ga.type = ‘text/javascript’; ga.async = true; ga.src = (‘https:’ == document.location.protocol ? ‘https://ssl’ : ‘http://www’) + ‘.google-analytics.com/ga.js’; var s = document.getElementsByTagName(‘script’)[0]; s.parentNode.insertBefore(ga, s); })(); Yes, you read that right. Cottage season has officially begun. And not only because Grandpa bought a new pontoon boat. Although that is nice too…

As of this evening, I am now a Cottage Industry business woman – I have an Etsy shop. When the kids stopped getting excited at the little things I had sewn them overnight, and instead asked me to stop making them things altogether, I knew it was time to branch out.

We were reminicsing about family recently and one memory that was vivid in everyone’s mind was my Nana dragging me (or any willing participant) ‘over the river’ to the Salvation Army in Niagara Falls NY, long before thrifting was popular. She would take her treasures home to display, or remodel into something completely new. I share that passion with my Nana – the thrill of the find, the desire to turn something tired and worn out into something new and beautiful.

In the true spirit of Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, most of my treasures incorporate repurposed materials. My very expensive designer jeans with a rip in the bum (I knew I should wait to lose more baby weight before squeezing into them) have morphed into cute little clutch bags. Dean’s suit is next in line for a makeover. If it can be cut and sewn, I’ll use it for something. This little bag used to be a beautiful Tulip skirt – until the zipper got stuck and broke. If Bronwyn decides it isn’t a good home for her Mermaid Barbie, it might just find it’s way into my Etsy shop…

Check me out at modernwallflower.etsy.com. If you see something you like and feel inclined to make a purchase (no pressure of course), I’m offering a 20% discount to anyone who reads this post. Just enter coupon code LIFEINPICTURES at checkout. The promotion is good through all of April – or until I remember to take it down.
