Saying Goodbye

We said our last goodbyes to Balsam Lake for the season today. Although we had quite an action-packed itinerary this summer, time still seemed to go by quickly. The air feels like fall and the trees are finally starting to show their colours. Time to pull out sweaters and socks and get ready to be overwhelmed with football and hockey.

Wvar _gaq = _gaq || []; _gaq.push([‘_setAccount’, ‘UA-22845532-1’]); _gaq.push([‘_trackPageview’]); (function() { var ga = document.createElement(‘script’); ga.type = ‘text/javascript’; ga.async = true; ga.src = (‘https:’ == document.location.protocol ? ‘https://ssl’ : ‘http://www’) + ‘.google-analytics.com/ga.js’; var s = document.getElementsByTagName(‘script’)[0]; s.parentNode.insertBefore(ga, s); })();
For our last trip to the cottage, Dean surprised us with a little adventure. Rather than head straight north after gymnastics on Saturday morning, as we would normally do, Dean suggested a little detour and a picnic lunch. The kids and I loved the idea so we headed to Kirkfield to check out the lift lock and have a sandwich.

I had driven under the locks many times, but never stopped. The kids had never seen anything like it. We ate our snack quickly and toured the locks, climbing all the way to the top level to check out the view. It wasn’t a very busy day on the canal, but we did get to see a few boats go through. If Bronwyn is willing, we may boat over for a picnic next summer.

After dinner, we wandered over to the park to blow off some steam. Of course, being the last trip of the year, Bronwyn made a significant breakthrough and found enough courage to slide down the big blue tube slide. She has been avoiding it all summer, not even daring to go down on my lap. Now, we had to pry her off the slide and drag her home kicking and screaming. And we were back first thing Sunday morning for more sliding. Maybe she is passed her nervous phase and will brave the boat next year.

Speaking of breakthroughs, Findley had a major one of his own on Saturday. We have been working all week on tying our laces. His runners from lacrosse are perfect indoor gym shoes and I refused to spend more money on shoes while these perfectly good ones collect dust in a cupboard. He resisted for a few days, but we persevered. On Saturday afternoon, after we broke the process down into terms he could relate to (the snake goes around the tree, sees a red-tailed hawk and hides in a hole), he did it! Now, he can’t wait for his shoes to come undone so he can tie them up again. The pride on his face is so sweet and I’ve saved myself at least $40. Enough for a mani-pedi for mommy – we all win!

After one last trip to the frog pond, we are finally back home. With a packed hockey schedule, there are no trips on our horizon until spring at the earliest. It will be nice to spend some time in the city and get into a fall routine that will keep us at home in our own beds every night.
