Sunday Six-Pack: Calgon Take Me Away Edition

It’s been quite a weekend. Dean left on Thursday night and isn’t due back until Monday afternoon. It’s the spring fish weekend and he and the boys are at the cottage for the opening of pickerel season. As it is every fishing weekend, it was cold and wet.

6. Our weekend started off really well, especially since it was Friday the 13th. After running a few errands, we settled in for a pajama party complete with movie, chocolate milk and cheezies. I opened a can of worms, however, when I let the kids sleep in the big bed with me. They are still there now.

5. Saturday brought a trip to the mall. I had very low expectations and the kids more than exceeded them. After returning a dress and picking up a few new things, we took a leisurely tour through the pet store. I’ve learned to do the fun stuff at the end of the trip, as a reward for good behaviour. It was a painful experience – I’m not a fan of hamsters, gerbils and bunnies and don’t get me started on the smell. But the kids enjoyed it and we had nowhere else to be – for a change.

4. Findley spent Saturday afternoon on the computer playing games. He’s been bugging to play Penguins of Madagascar for weeks. It’s his new favorite show and he can’t get enough of these guys. I’m not completely sold on the show, but it’s much better than Sponge Bob. I’m picking my battles. Bronwyn wasn’t much into napping so my long list of chores was put aside in order to play with puzzles, dolls and Lego.  Like Pops says, she’s quite the pill.

3. Saturday night turned into Pajama Party Take Two. Silly me – I thought the kids would sit nicely on the sofa and watch the hockey game like civilized children. I don’t know whose kids I was thinking about, but mine ran in circles, hit each other with pillows and I’m sure one of them still has bite marks on his head. I moved the party upstairs and they made it through two periods before I shut the party down.

It was too wet for Popsicles outside, but the rain didn’t stop us from enjoying them inside!

2. Unfortunately, they both had plans to sleep in my bed – again – and there was no changing their minds. I have not had such a bad night’s sleep since the night I nearly died on the bathroom floor in Mexico last May. Bronwyn was sleeping lengthwise and jabbing her foot into my ribs on one side, and Finn kept elbowing me in the side and hitting me in the head from the other. I was a giant punching bag. Midway through the night, I came to my senses and crawled into Bronwyn’s room, where I slept soundly until they found me at six A.M.

1. By mid-day Sunday, I couldn’t take anymore bickering and biting – we had to get outside, rain or shine. Some fresh air, a bit of exercise and open spaces were just the ticket. We walked and biked and played for a good hour or so in the rain. Bronwyn had a blast jumping in puddles and Finn thought it was great to ride his bike through them. I was happy and nobody was fighting or throwing anything.

Bronwyn wore her Toronto Rock Lacrosse shirt to bed to celebrate their defeating the Washington Stealth to win the MLL Championship.

After drying off, we enjoyed some quiet time baking muffins, playing with puzzles and just spending time together. And the best part of the weekend? It seems that raccoons are not fans of talk radio. Or maybe it’s the rain. I’m not going to over analyze things, I’m just happy they haven’t been back. Yet.

Is that a yawn? Must be time for bed.
